We have been to many facilities over our 30+ years of experience and never found that “perfect” place that combined every thing we felt was necessary for a dog’s happiness. Swears that “Doggie” was her first word.  She has been training dogs since the age of 10 when she competed in her first kids dog show.  She received a B.S. degree in Animal Science in 1991 from Delaware Valley College and started actively competing in K9 disc competitions across the United States and performing her Canine shows since 1997. She’s the founder of a flying disc dog club in the Northeast, the Yankee Flyers Dog and Disc Club.

Gail has also been involved in other canine sports, Flyball, since 1999, she was the Captian of the CT Frequent Flyers for 3 years until she moved to New Jersey where she started her new team Grab & Go.  She and her dogs also compete in Dock Diving and Agility events.

As a dog lover and trainer for more than one canine sport, she travels across the country sharing her expertise and entertaining crowds .

Gail has been performing Frisbee® Dogs shows since 1997 with her first dog Austin, she is the first and only woman from the Northeast that has ever won a regional event or who has qualified at the Alpo Canine Disc World Championship and the Purina Incredible Dog Chow Nationals.  In 1999 and 2000, she was the only competitor in the United States to qualify for both the Alpo Canine Disc World Championship and the Purina Incredible Dog Chow Nationals.  Her peers voted her 2001 “Best Female Player of the Year”, and Gail was also a member of the Purina Incredible Dog Team from 2000-2005.

Her greatest accomplishment would be her 4 year (two tours) of performances for the Greatest Show on Earth, Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus (2/2006-11/2009).  Her dog act wowed the crowds across the United States and she was voted by her fellow performers the “2008 Best Animal Act” award.  She also toured with Cirquesa, a theatrical circus (Jan-March 2010) in the state of Florida and was the featured act for a month at the Medora Musical in Medora, ND (June 2010).

Gail’s entourage includes the unique combination of a father & son duo that performs acrobatic, freestyle routines. The father, Dallas, was and still is Gail’s most talented dog. He was the star at Ringling for 4 yrs and continues to astound the crowds.  His son, Laredo, is right on his way to following in his father’s paw prints, his ariel acrobatics amazes everyone.  To round out the show, Seven,  also an Australian Shepherd, was adopted, and performs jump rope tricks while her three Border Collies; Jetzen, with striking blue eyes, demonstrates jet-like speed in all tricks. Chaps, who was rescued and is known for his quick and agile disposition that allows him to catch almost every thrown and Tag, also adopted is one of the greatest High Jump dogs around, his record jump is an incredible 54“.  Her troop also includes three tenacious Rat Terriers; Topper “the show stopper” is a crowd pleaser that races at top speed and enthusiasm when chasing down a disc, Charlotte, rescued out of Florida, displays incredible vertical jumping abilities and hoop tricks and  the smallest of her team, Pyper can walk on barrels and highwire.  The newest member of her team, Kharma a tiny mini Aussie, was adopted only 6 months ago and is already part of the show, riding on a scooter and walking on the “wheel of steel”! Her pack is completed with a tiny terrier mix,  Cricket, who was rescued many years ago and is part of the “munchkins of Mayhem” and of course no act would be complete without a Standard Poodle, Joker is his name and chaos is his game. Through performances with her canine team, Gail not only entertains but also showcases to the audiences the happy and healthy relationship she has with each and everyone of her dogs. Gail supports the belief that with a little time, patience and positive training anyone can create a special bond with their dog.

When you visit a dog boarding facility in the Alpharetta, GA area, really take a good look at the staff. Do they LOVE what they do? Or are they just there because it’s a job? I’ve seen both when I was investigating dog boarding facilities and I can assure you, you will immediately be able to see who loves animals and who doesn’t. Go with the animal lovers! Your dog senses these things too

2. Referrals, Referrals, Referrals.

If your neighbors and friends are frequenting a dog boarding facility in Alpharetta, you want to know about it! And. . . .if your neighbors and friends have had a good or bad experience at another dog boarding facility, you want to know about that too! For Five Star Dog Resort, we encourage our guests to give feedback all the time – that’s the only way we know if we are doing the best job we can, or if there are areas we need to improve upon. 3. Hours of Operation.

Is the dog boarding facility only open 9-5 during the week and closed on the weekends? If you get home on Friday night, can you go and pick your pooch up on Saturday? Or, do you need to wait until Monday morning? What happens if you have an emergency come up and you need a place for your dog to stay just for the day? My advice – Look for a dog boarding facility that has long hours and is open 7 days a week.

4. Quality of Facility.

What does the boarding facility look like? I remember when I first started traveling for work and had to leave my dog at a boarding facility. The first few times I just left my dog with the veterinary clinic. It never occured to me to actually take a look at where my dog would be staying. When I finally asked the vet if I could take a look at the boarding facilities, I was horrified to find out that my dog was literally staying in a small cage and let out only a couple of times a day. The kennel area was cramped and. . . .really LOUD!  While this might have been okay for a small dog. . .I didn’t think it was a good fit for my 45 pound medium sized dog. (Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE our vet! She actually saved my dogs life once – another story. Our vet is great, just not for boarding!)

Thus began my  journey of popping in to various dog boarding facilities and inspecting the areas where my “best friend” would potentially be residing while I was away. When I visited, I listened to see how loud the facility was, I made sure to view the kennels, I smelled around – did the kennel smell bad? Like urine and feces? or did it smell clean and antiseptic? I watched the staff and I looked at the dogs. Eventually I found the ideal spot (I’m partial to Five Star – but encourage you and your dog to make the best decision for you!) After returning from a road trip or family vacation, the last thing you want to do is drive for an hour to pick up your dog. And, the last thing your dog probably wants to do, is sit in a car for an hour before lavishing you with love!

What qualifies your pet in the spoiled category?

The definition of spoiled is “ to impair the disposition or character of by overindulgence or excessive praise”.

Does it mean you feed them the best food, do they have a bunch of different beds, do they have different outfits for different occasions?

What about the amount of collars your dog has?

Where do we draw the line and how do we know if there really is a way to spoil your dog? Do they notice that they have a better life or do they even like all the extras that we give them?

Some things are obviously necessary. A few jackets or sweaters for a dog is practical because we have domesticated them so much as far as keeping them inside and keeping them inside but it is the excessive amount of clothes, collars, food, and extras that are in questions here. 

There is a difference in children and dogs when it comes to the understanding of certain things. Dogs have no concept of money so if the more expensive dog food makes them healthier is that really “spoiling” them? The coats for example dogs don’t understand what material is “better” they just know if them are kept warm.

So really when it comes to upgrading your dogs wardrobe and other things it is really like spoiling yourself, only because they do not have a concept of money. They know their personal comfort as far as space, a bed, food, and so on.

Dogs do obviously need limit’s the same as children do. They need to understand who is the boss in your relationship, just as any good trainer will tell you. So what do you think?
