I’ve seen both when I was investigating dog boarding facilities and I can assure you, you will immediately be able to see who loves animals and who doesn’t. Go with the animal lovers! 3. Hours of Operation.

Is the dog boarding facility only open 9-5 during the week and closed on the weekends? If you get home on Friday night, can you go and pick your pooch up on Saturday? Or, do you need to wait until Monday morning? What happens if you have an emergency come up and you need a place for your dog to stay just for the day? My advice – Look for a dog boarding facility that has long hours and is open 7 days a week.

What does the boarding facility look like? I remember when I first started traveling for work and had to leave my dog at a boarding facility. The first few times I just left my dog with the veterinary clinic. It never occured to me to actually take a look at where my dog would be staying. When I finally asked the vet if I could take a look at the boarding facilities, I was horrified to find out that my dog was literally staying in a small cage and let out only a couple of times a day. The kennel area was cramped and. . . .really LOUD!  While this might have been okay for a small dog. . .I didn’t think it was a good fit for my 45 pound medium sized dog. (Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE our vet! She actually saved my dogs life once – another story. Our vet is great, just not for boarding!)

Thus began my  journey of popping in to various dog boarding facilities and inspecting the areas where my “best friend” would potentially be residing while I was away. When I visited, I listened to see how loud the facility was, I made sure to view the kennels, I smelled around – did the kennel smell bad? Like urine and feces? or did it smell clean and antiseptic? I watched the staff and I looked at the dogs. Eventually I found the ideal spot (I’m partial to Five Star – but encourage you and your dog to make the best decision for you!) After returning from a road trip or family vacation, the last thing you want to do is drive for an hour to pick up your dog. And, the last thing your dog probably wants to do, is sit in a car for an hour before lavishing you with love!

We have been to many facilities over our 30+ years of experience and never found that “perfect” place that combined every thing we felt was necessary for a dog’s happiness. What qualifies your pet in the spoiled category?

The definition of spoiled is “ to impair the disposition or character of by overindulgence or excessive praise”.

Does it mean you feed them the best food, do they have a bunch of different beds, do they have different outfits for different occasions?

What about the amount of collars your dog has?

Where do we draw the line and how do we know if there really is a way to spoil your dog? Do they notice that they have a better life or do they even like all the extras that we give them?

Some things are obviously necessary. A few jackets or sweaters for a dog is practical because we have domesticated them so much as far as keeping them inside and keeping them inside but it is the excessive amount of clothes, collars, food, and extras that are in questions here. 

There is a difference in children and dogs when it comes to the understanding of certain things. Dogs have no concept of money so if the more expensive dog food makes them healthier is that really “spoiling” them? The coats for example dogs don’t understand what material is “better” they just know if them are kept warm.

So really when it comes to upgrading your dogs wardrobe and other things it is really like spoiling yourself, only because they do not have a concept of money. They know their personal comfort as far as space, a bed, food, and so on.

Dogs do obviously need limit’s the same as children do. They need to understand who is the boss in your relationship, just as any good trainer will tell you. So what do you think? Sydney is a 2 year old Boxer. She comes to play with us when her mom works in Atlanta. She has also been trained by the amazing training staff at Five Star – Now she sits, stays, heals, and more!! Congrats Sydney!

Well this is the reason, when dogs get bored, they find things to occupy time.

Some dogs just sleep or walk around but other dogs will chew on things and tear up things.

Yes, training will help a lot with most of these problems,  but this is a quick fix. Buying your dogs interesting toys definitely help your dog have a good time and not chew your furniture and other items.

Another good idea would be a toy that dispenses food like a Kong and fill it before you leave the house.  This will keep most dog’s interest but you should always try new toys and see which ones your dog like the most!My dogs love a ball that drops out food a little at a time called a “giggle ball”. Training is a definite must if your problem proceeds!

 Five Star Dog Resort can help you with most training needs. Your dog should understand that chewing everything is not okay and will not be tolerated a good trainer can help you with this.

You may also consider a dog sitter who your dog knows that you can pay to come by once or twice a day. If you don’t know someone to come by then a dog walker is a possibility and you should always ask for references from friends who have dogs, or you veterinarian.
